Switzerland, Zurich, 1846, 4r Black, Horizontal Lines (1L3; Michel 1II; Zumstein 1W). Mint N.H., large to full margins all around, fresh shade, fine impression (a few areas of the background slightly worn) VERY FINE. AN AMAZING MINT NEVER HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1846 4-RAPPEN ZURICH CANTONAL. ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND THIS CLASSIC RARITY WITH ORIGINAL GUM - LET ALONE NEVER HINGED. In 1843 the Canton of Zurich decided to issue stamps to prepay postage. These were issued in two denominations: the 4-rappen for local letters, and a 6-rappen stamp for use on letters to other cantonal districts. The 4r stamps are far rarer than the 6r values. Not only are the 4r stamps rare, but they typically come in poor quality - cut in on one or more sides, and often with faults and/or repairs. The vast majority of unused copies lack gum entirely. Only a small number exist with full original gum. This is the only example we have seen where a recognized Swiss expert has specifically noted the stamp as "postfrisch" (never hinged). When you also consider this stamp has full margins and is free from the faults that plague the vast majority, it must surely be among the most desirable copies available. With 2000 Renggli certificate. Catalogue prices are for no gum or original gum and hinged. Scott $18,500 (as no gum). Michel €22,000. Zumstein SF 22,000
