Description
India, Used in Nepal, 1854, 4a Red & Blue, 4th Printing, Head Die III, Frame Die II (6F; SG 23). Cut to shape, mostly tight margins to just barely touching, tied by smudgy "B/157" cancel on mourning cover to London, forwarded to Canterbury, sender's directive "Prepaid by a Stamp to England via Southampton", clear violet "Nepaul P.O. 4 Dec. 1856" double-circle despatch datestamp on back, initialed "GR" at bottom left by G. Ramsay, red framed "INDIA PAID" and "TOO LATE, G.P.O." handstamps, Calcutta (Dec. 8) and London (Jan. 22) transit and Canterbury arrival datestamps, cover with slight soiling and vertical file fold not affecting stamp FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 4-ANNAS LITHOGRAPH ON COVER FROM NEPAL TO ENGLAND. WE ESTIMATE LESS THAN HALF A DOZEN 4-ANNA LITHOGRAPHS FROM NEPAL EXIST. With 1984 Dr. Hellrigl certificate
