Description
Uruguay, 1866, 20c on 6c Rose (27, 27d). Complete sheet of 224 consisting of four panes of 56 separated by vertical and horizontal gutters, unused (no gum), wonderfully fresh color with excellent impressions, Position 223 with surcharge omitted (Scott 27d), few flaws as would be expected including minor manuscript mark in right margin, few stray toned or stained spots, and creases including between panes causing some splitting at center VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A SPECTACULAR COMPLETE SHEET OF THE 1866 20-CENTESIMOS ESCUDITO SURCHARGE. POSSIBLY THE ONLY INTACT SHEET STILL IN EXISTENCE. There are thought to be about five or six panes of 56 known. The Hoffmann collection had a complete pane of this 20c surcharge value but without any photographic evidence, we are unable to confirm whether this is from his collection or a second recorded pane. From the Magnolia collection. Scott $8,960 simply as unused singles without any premium for the pane or the surcharge omitted error (which is listed but unpriced in Scott)
