WILLIAMSTOWN RACING CLUB: Huge ledger containing 401 programmes of
forthcomong races from 1889 to 1941, with winners' names added in
manuscript, and additional details regarding weather, weights,
attendances, unusual occurrences, meetings held at Caulfield or
Moonee Valley; includes the 1931 Underwood Stakes won by Phar Lap,
mainly Fair/Fine condition. Also a 1940s photograph of 9 racing
personalities including JJ Liston, Sir Norman Robinson & EA
Underwood. The programmes for the last 4 meetings have no results
as the track was closed. [A marvellous archive. The racecourse was
opened in 1869, and the last recorded race was on 10 February 1940,
after which the army commandeered the racecourse for the remainder
of World War II. In 1947, fire destroyed the grandstands, and the
following year Williamstown Racing Club was forced to merge with
the Victorian Trotting & Racing Association to form the new
Melbourne Racing Club]
