Lot 1098 - G.B. - PRINTED PAPERS BY POST - OTHER CATEGORIES - UNIQUE(?) COVER RECOVERED FROM THE SEA IN A CANISTER (A BOTTLE?) - FROM AN OFFICIAL TIDAL FLOW EXPERIMENT; 14 Aug. 1858 EL headed "On Public Service" and addressed to the Naval Academy London with contents headed "High water, 2.30 pm 1858 - Flood just made/Re Harbour Ramsgate Northwest. 1 pm/August 14h 3 miles distant/Any persons finding this, be pleased to/write down the time when and place/where and forward it to its address by/Post or to nearest consuls Office, as it/is intended to show the Setts of the tides/for the benifit of navigation generally" signed by the Ramsgate Harbour Master. The letter also has a later addition; "Neiport/Near Ostend /28 Aug 1858 /Sir/The enclosed has just/been brought to me 6 P.M. /having been picked up in/the course of the afternoon at the/same place, or very near thereby" and signed by "Lloyd's Vice Agent". The letter was then resealed and sent to London, has a fine "NIEUPORT" cds and smudged examples on face and reverse of the Nieuport Consular intaglio seal. It was charged "8[d]" incoming Ship Letter rate and has an uncancelled 1d Red 'stars' (understandable wrinkling) which was to pay the return postage if the letter was found on a UK beach. It is believed that the navy used this method to trace tidal flow and the letter was placed in a cylinder (a glass bottle?) before being dropped in the sea. A most interesting story - it was in the sea for 2 weeks - and the only example that we have seen. Probably the earliest surviving tide-experiment letter in existence. [Illustrated in BPPP, p.564.] [Ex Cavendish Sept. 2015 auction; lot 1843, realised £1,800+BP.] Estimate £1000.
Lot 1291 - GREAT BRITAIN KGVI HIGH VALUES USED TO AUSTRALIA - 1941 REMARKABLE FRANKING - POSSIBLY THE GREATEST 20th CENTURY COVER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE: 18 July 1941 linen backed cover (365 x 210 mm) from London by North Atlantic and Trans Pacific Mail to Melbourne. Bearing a record franking of 9d (2), 5/- and no less than 34 10/- dark blue consisting of three blocks of eight, a block of four, two pairs and two singles paying the 77 x 4/6d per ½oz rate. Some creasing which is to be expected with such a large item. Note: this cover was discovered in an auction in a carton laying face down as a liner. The late Peter Jaffe, RDP, FRPSL and eminent international exhibitor, rated this item as a contender for the greatest 20th century cover of the British Empire. Ex Gartner Auctions 2013. Estimate £3000.
Lot G.B. - PRINTED PAPERS BY POST – PARLIAMENTARY - VERY RARE 1d BLACK "PARLIAMENTARY PROCEEDINGS" COVER - THE 'FRONT COVER ITEM' FROM GAVIN'S BOOK; 7 Apr. 1841 E with special printed "PARLIAMENTARY PROCEEDINGS" heading above the address, partly printed "To The/Right Reverend/The Bishop of [Norwich, Palace, Norwich]" address, and "Parish Register/Return" imprint, sent from "IPSWICH" (fine cds nicely placed on the lower flap) and prepaid with a 4-margin Plate 8 1d Black (DB) tied by a very fine black Ipswich Maltese Cross. Interestingly there was also a printed square in the 'stamp position' (part just visible at the top left of the stamp) to remind the sender to apply a postage stamp! Only a handful of Par. Pro. 1d Black covers have been recorded, all from this correspondence to the Bishop of Norwich. This was the item that Gavin Fryer selected from his entire collection to grace the front cover of his "British Printed Papers by Post" magnum opus. Exhibition Item of great Importance and Character. [Illustrated in BPPP; front cover + p.49.] [RPSL Cert. (2007)]. Estimate £1200.
